Reece left the comms tower to head back to their room, with Caleb and Stomatt dogging his heels. He told them, “You might be right yet, Caleb – she might not belong back with her dad, but we got a responsibility to see that through. I do, anyway, I got us into all this. And you all seen what she can do. Won’t necessarily come without reward, one way or another.”

“You ain’t got the feeling, though,” Caleb said carefully, “we might not wanna cross these people?”

“We just took on Steer Trust,” Reece smiled. “Who’s gonna stop us now?”

Stomatt jumped to ruffle Caleb’s hair, shoving his head. “Yeah, cheer up – we rich as all saints and you’re crying cause some fairy with a sword got a beef!”

Caleb pushed back. “Get your dirty paws off me!”

“Go on and make me, you morose motherfucker.” Stomatt lunged, trying to get him in a headlock. “Where’s your muscle?”

Stomatt pushed too far and Caleb shoved him hard. “Said back the hell off, Sto!”

Reece skipped ahead, up the steps to the private little room. The instruments were laid out between their beds. La Belle Vérité chief among them. The matte black nickel and brass trumpet, his world in a twist of metal. As he picked it up and tested a note, Stomatt and Caleb tussled in behind him. Another note. Ran his fingers over the buttons for a little flourish. There was the sound. That was the truth, and it calmed the boys.

“Damn swords and gorillas,” Reece said quietly. “And red eyes and psychic powers. Leave that to the breeze, we got this.”

He gave it a blast as Caleb plugged in the electric bass and Stomatt squatted for a tom tom. The big trombone lay between them, a violin to one side – ready for later. Reece picked up a tune, blended it into the Stilt Town Serenade, that little light number he produced just for this place. Community looking out for each other, like the gang did. Except he’d seen Gray was unsettled and Zip was even more so. Didn’t like those odds.

As they relaxed into the music, letting all that go, he let the truth run through him.

Sure enough, their journey didn’t end here.
